Weekend Trip To Heidelberg, Germany

Heidelberg is a gorgeous medieval town located in the south-west of Germany and is just 80kms from Frankfurt. This picturesque town also has the reputed Heidelberg University and is bustling with students from all around the world.

Based on the 326km long River Necker, Heidelberg has a lot to offer to the tourists. A weekend or 48 hours is a good enough time to see some gorgeous spots and you can tick off things to do in Heidelberg happily!

Places to See:

Philosophers’ Walk

Philosphers’ Walk should be the 1st thing to cover in the to-do list for a good reason. It provides a mind-blowing panoramic view of the entire town of Heidelberg. A 2km beautiful trail, you will not regret the steep walk as your eyes will be treated to the most picturesque view of the old bridge, castle and the old town of.

The name “Philosopher” was given when in the olden times, all the students of Heidelberg had to study Philosophy before starting their special studies. An interesting fact about Philosophers’ Walk- the students discovered the trail to have a romantic stroll with their partners.

The Old Bridge

The original name of this beautiful bridge is actually Karl Theodor Bridge. Built-in 1788, it is almost 250 years old and hence commonly known as the “Old Bridge”.

Bustling with locals and tourists alike, this bridge provides a dreamy view and you cannot help but just stand and gaze at the beauty of the town from it. The Old Bridge connects the old town of Heidelberg with the eastern part of the district.

The Old Town

Right across the Old Bridge is the Old town of Heidelberg dating back to the 12th century. With narrow lanes filled with adorable shops of chocolates and all things happy, time flies by just wandering there.

This historic part of the town consists of Gothic churches, the University, Market Squares, lots of restaurants and bars. This square also hosts the Christmas Market filled with cute shops and eateries. We spent the whole evening there drinking glühwein (mulled wine) and eating delicious snacks.

Heidelberg Castle

The red sandstone castle standing at 100 meters above the Necker River dates back to the 12th century and dominates the town. Heidelberg Castle has quite a history as it was destroyed in the war by the French not ones but twice in 1689 and 1693. Also, it was struck by lightning in 1764 causing major destruction.

Tourists can visit the castle using the Bergbahn (funicular railway) to Schloss (Palace) station. You cannot miss visiting the cellar to see the Heidelberg Tun, which is the largest barrack and can withhold almost 50000 gallons of wine!
