Curd Rice Recipe

I was never into Curd Rice until recently. Sometimes our tummies crave a simple, nutritious meal after crazy rounds of nonstop heavy foods leading to indigestion and stomach upset. It happens to me during festive seasons or too many social events.

Well, Curd Rice happens to be the ultimate meal that comes to your belly’s rescue. Originating from the southern part of India, this dish is lovingly eaten almost daily by South Indians and there is a good reason for that. It is full of protein, calcium and is also a good antioxidant.

Curd Rice helps during indigestion as it is a good source of probiotics which ultimately leads to improving the body’s immunity. It has a cooling effect on the stomach as well.

But the best part about Curd Rice is that it is very easy and quick to prepare and it absolutely tastes divine! It is really delicious. These are good enough reasons to try making it yourself. So here is the recipe! Make it and enjoy it!

Ingredients:

  • Rice (rice of any choice) – 1 cup
  • Home-made curd (beaten) – 1 cup
  • 1 tbsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tbsp urad daal
  • 1 tbsp asafetida (hing)
  • 1-2 green chilies
  • 4-5 fresh curry leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander for garnishing

Method:

  1. Wash the rice 2-3 times until the water runs clear. Pressure cook it with 2 and a half cups of water to get the extra soft consistency.
  2. Once cooked, mash the rice a bit and let it cool down for a few minutes.
  3. Transfer the cooled rice to a big bowl and add the beaten curd to it along with salt and mix it well.
  4. For the tempering, heat a small pan and add 1 tbsp vegetable oil.
  5. Add mustard seeds, urad dal, hing, green chilies and curry leaves to it, let them crackle and release the flavours.
  6. Add this tempered mixture to the bowl of curd and rice and mix well.
  7. Garnish with fresh coriander and enjoy the delicious Curd Rice.

Wash and cook the rice extra mushy so that the beaten curd can integrate really well with it

Tempering is the key as it brings life to this dish by adding the delicious flavours

Add the hot and sizzling tempered mixture of mustard seeds, urad dal, asafoetida, green chillies and curry leaves

Serve it in a bowl, garnish with fresh coriander and enjoy the delicious Curd Rice to heart’s content!
